Legendary Julie d'Aubigny Maupin retells her own extraordinary life. A queer, gender-nonconforming seventeenth-century opera singer, skilled sword fighter and duellist, she revisits the sensational—and sometimes uncertain—stories that have shaped her enduring legend.

Julie d'Aubigny was more than just an opera singer, or, at least, she is to us. […] With La Maupin, we weren't trying to make a historical drama. We wanted to explore what the myth of Maupin means for modern-day queer individuals. What does this history mean to us, even though it may or may not be true? […] I hope La Maupin gives audiences a taste of the fanciful life that Julie d'Aubigny could have led. I think she can be whatever she needs to be, for whoever needs her.
