When a rookie forest ranger flees into the Quebec wilderness to escape a brutal hazing ritual, he finds himself hunted not only by his peers, but by a towering creature of folklore stalking him through the woods.
A 2016 film graduate from UQAM, Frédéric Chalté specializes in short-form horror inspired by folklore and contemporary genre cinema. His internationally screened and awarded films revisit figures such as monsters, witches and rituals, combining cultural roots with nightmarish atmospheres. Influenced by European horror cinema of the 1960s to 1980s, he approaches each project as a sensory exploration of the macabre and supernatural. His works include The Babysitter, No One Will Ever Believe You and Le otto dita della morte. La Hère is his fifth short film.
What began as a horror tale quickly revealed itself as a story about queerness, difference, and belonging. As a bisexual filmmaker, I see in the Kid and his colleague Barniques two opposing paths: embracing one's identity or suppressing it to blend in. The Hère itself embodies a liminal, hybrid existence—an unsettling yet liberating alternative to conformity. […] In continuing the tradition of horror as a discreet yet powerful vessel for queer narratives, La Hère seeks to explore fear, identity, and the possibility of finding community beyond the margins.
