Synopsis

On their seventh birthday, a child living with their "perfect family" in a "dollhouse" feels suffocated by traditional expectations and conventional gender norms. Their only escape is to make a magical birthday wish before blowing out the candle on the cake.

Filmmaker Bio

Fernanda Beling is a Brazilian multidisciplinary artist from Salvador, Bahia. Trained in Art Direction at EICTV in Cuba and in Performing Arts at the Federal University of Bahia, she began her career as an award-winning actress before working in directing and art departments. Her production design has also received awards in Latin America. As a writer, Beling earned three awards for her first feature project, Menarche. Blow (Sopro) marks her debut film as a director.

Director's Statement

I believe in art as a transformative element, and I manifest in my auteur cinema issues that touch me as a human being. […] Given these data and the difficulties faced by our community, "Sopro" emerges as an artistic strategy to invite empathy and understanding of these existences, focusing on the visibility of vulnerable children. […] The tone and style of the film […] aim to reach hearts around the world and spread its message regardless of geographic and cultural restrictions, subtly and delicately introducing audiences to a perspective that will encourage respect and acceptance.
