Ben Assouly and Suzanne Cordeau-Andrews came to filmmaking from different fields. Ben studied law before turning to photography and videography. Suzanne studied finance and worked in tech before moving into film production two years ago. Both have lived in various parts of the world and chose Montreal as their base, drawn to its cultural richness and diversity. They met there and have since collaborated on fiction and documentary projects. Their experiences abroad inform the stories they tell, the assumptions they question, and the way they work across languages and borders.
We shot in a rustic attic in Vienna. To reflect the timeless themes of love and loss, we used candlelight, antique-looking accessories, and a colour grade based on an emulation of Kodak 2383 print film to create an eerie atmosphere without a clear period setting. We worked with local actresses and translated the French script into Austrian German, retaining contemporary dialogue to contrast with the setting. Inspired by Portrait of a Lady on Fire, we favoured glances, silences, and closeness over explicit scenes to convey the intimacy between the women.
