Three transgender individuals share their perspectives on their birth names and chosen names.
Math Bélanger-Landry (she/he/they) is a non-binary filmmaker, editor and composer of Oji-Cree descent. A graduate of Université du Québec à Montréal in Film, she directed her first short documentary, Racines (2024), about adoption in the context of the Sixties Scoop settlement. After working in editing and music composition for Nish Media, notably on the series Pitago Stop (2026), he continued his studies at Concordia University in Film Animation, where he directed Stretto (2026). While specializing in animation, editing and music, they are particularly interested in representing voices erased by history.
I began thinking about Stretto when I started questioning my own first name. A first name can often be a particularly direct — almost violent— indicator of gender identity, one that is conceived and interpreted differently depending on social context. Therefore, I wanted to create a dialogue among several trans and/or nonbinary people who have gone through their transitions in different countries and with various forms of socialization. These conversations were immensely fulfilling to my own journey, and I hope that through this very short film, others will also feel better understood.
