Synopsis

Welcome to the world of beer league sports, where Joanne Pico (Jess Salgueiro) is coach to six-time league losers, “The Public Lass Brovaries.” Coach Joanne is dead set on turning things around this season despite having just been brutally dumped by her girlfriend and co-founder of the team. Throughout the summer, Joanne leads her lovable, chaotic crew through a season of strikeouts, petty rivalries, conservative-politician sponsors, and sexycarwash fundraisers gone wrong. With her ex now playing on a rival team, Joanne’s got a lot to prove this season. It’s time to win the breakup, get the gang back together, and maybe even find new love over beers in the dugout.

Filmmaker Bio

In television, J directed two episodes of Tubi’s THE Z-SUITE and previously worked on the Peabody Award–winning series SORT OF (HBO Max/CBC). J is also the founder and president of the Spindle Films Foundation, a nonprofit supporting transgender, non-binary and gender-diverse Canadian filmmakers.

Director's Statement

SLO PITCH grew from the drama and hijinks of recreational sports and a shared love of mockumentary comedy. […] We wanted a mostly female, non-binary and queer beer-league team where women and non-binary people could “just be idiots” and embrace dumb humour. […] Representation is simply along for the ride: above all, the series is meant to be an escape, “a barrel of laughs” that lets audiences forget, for a moment, how overwhelming the world can feel.

SEVENTEEN[INDIGIQUEER VOICES]89 minutesNOV 28 / 17:00

The lives of three sex workers become intertwined in the crowded corners of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside—and even more so with the workers in question being young, queer, and indigenous. Housing, citizenship, and family are just a few pressing issues weighing on the trio’s minds, sparking heartfelt conversations and crucial decisions. Tamara has lost her passport and needs to find it for a safe return to the US, while Aiden needs to find enough money to put down a deposit on an apartment. December is holding everything and everyone together, but in doing so, she hopes to avoid a daunting phone call back home to her family on the reserve. Not the issues of your average seventeen year old, same with grieving the death of your father, or resenting your dependence on your sugar daddy (who happens to be hooked on cocaine). Nonetheless, hope and resilience find their places in these young people’s lives, in moments of connection—seeing each other, being seen and supported, helping each push through their hectic day to the possibility of a brighter future.
