In the early nineteenth century, a tailor makes a dress for themselves. Through the careful process of constructing the garment, the act of creation also becomes a way to affirm their identity and prepare to come out to their family.
Aaren Rackett is a trans, disabled animator and illustrator based in Canada. He uses his art to explore queer and neurodivergent identity through different degrees of fantasy and loves to create characters that embody these experiences. When he's not drawing or animating, he spends his time using historical hand sewing to make unique clothing.
Shaping a Dress is about a regency era tailor going through the process of making a dress for themselves as a way of coming out to their family. The film is based on my own experiences of making historic clothing as a transgender person. With this film, I wanted to tell a trans story that focuses on kindness and community and with a coming out story that is able to be soft and uncomplicated.
