During a Christmas dinner, Nelly discovers the strange pictures her daughter is taking.
At 22 years old, Maïlys Papineau got a bachelor’s degree in Cinema and Media Arts from the University of Montreal. She’s a young filmmaker, composer and performer from Quebec. In 2026, during her final year of university, she wrote and directed her first short film, Sels d’argent. The film was selected to represent the University of Montreal at the most recent edition of the FNC RPCÉ. Maïlys also composes the entirety of the film's soundtrack. Driven by a profound sensibility and a unique poetry, Maïlys explores the complexity of human relationship through both cinema and music.
One of the main intentions about Sels d’argent is to encourage the audience to see things from different perspectives and to accept that their own “truth” is not necessarily other’s truth. It’s from Nelly's point of view and then her daughter’s, Marianne, that the movie reveals the different ways in which the events can be perceived. Thus, the secret Marianne keeps through the photographs she takes reveals that everything is more complex than we believe and that there are always hidden elements that go beyond what we choose to see.
