Synopsis

Rendered in breathtaking monochrome, 17th-century Germany is a land of velvety fogs and depthless nights. Just as black-and-white is the close-knit Protestant community where “The Soldier” (Sandra Hüller, Berlinale’s Best Leading Performance-winner) finds herself. A society whose codes she tries, as a man, to bend to her entrepreneurial spirit. Rose emerges from smouldering fields filled with cracked skulls, a survivor of the Thirty Years’ War. “A Deceiver of Land and Folk” who claims an inheritance that is not hers to tend a farm long neglected, hoping to make it her own. To settle peacefully. Though, her battles are far from finished. Rose must endure fence-knocking storms and obdurate skepticism. Her concealment a matter of “constant vigilance.” Wanting more for herself, she strikes a bargain and is paired with a wife, Suzanna (Caro Braun), who demands impregnation. The two faced with a choice: remain at odds or operate as a unit. For further deception and unspeakable barbarism awaits those caught unawares. Markus Schleinzer’s historical drama unmasks the power of appearances and self-invention, as well as their burden. And leaves us shaken by the reverberation of true openness.

Director's Statement

I’d say that my three films, Michael, Angelo and ROSE, strive towards this theme in a variety of ways. Rose isn’t a revolutionary. She isn’t inspired by a social concept, she doesn’t want to set an example so things will be better for future generations. […] She isn’t a revolutionary, but her actions are revolutionary. […] I think empathy is fine, but I also think we have to pay more attention to the responsibility we have with and to and for each other.
