CHRIS VAUTOUR + LAURENCE BIDAL-POULIOT | CANADA | 2026 | 5 MIN | NO DIALOGUE
A grey-haired Gen-X butch lesbian and a graceful Gen-Z stripper take on pole dancing, side by side each as a queer meditation on radical self-acceptance, sisterhood and the cycle of birth, death and rebirth.
Chris Vautour and Laurence Bidal-Pouliot are queer filmmakers from different generations. Vautour, a Gen-X butch lesbian, has worked for decades in film locations and has recently turned toward directing her own work, including Enzo My Familiar and The Robin's Nest. Bidal-Pouliot is a bisexual filmmaker and competitive pole dancer whose debut short Never Fully Naked premiered at the 2025 Vancouver Queer Film Festival. Together, their work brings butch resilience, queer sensuality, sisterhood and intergenerational collaboration into conversation.
Pole Are Opposites is what happens when two queer generations, Chris, a 57-year-old Gen-X butch lesbian, and Laurence, a 27-year-old bisexual filmmaker, collide in a room stripped of everything but themselves. […] We wanted to put two queer bodies on poles: one young trained, and graceful, one older, heavy, and raw. […] As co-directors from different generations, we're tired of seeing the same sanitized queer stories. We want mess, muscle, fat and contradiction.
