Nicky Gee is a vibrant documentary portrait of the Queen of Quebec City's Lower Town. Through her music, Nicky expresses her emotions and speaks out against the discrimination and assaults experienced by her community.
Immersed in the world of music from an early age, Lili Labelle developed an artistic perspective shaped by sensitivity, emotion, and storytelling. She worked in film and television production between Montreal and New York before pursuing studies in documentary filmmaking at L’inis in 2022. Her film Cinq Octobre, made during her studies, screened at several festivals and won the Best Documentary Emerging Talent Award at the 2023 Prends ça court! Gala. Working across documentary filmmaking and advertising, she gravitates toward intimate, character-driven stories infused with humanity.
Created at a time when L’heure du conte avec Barbada was sparking controversy, this film grew out of my inability to understand the backlash and my desire to celebrate drag culture. In Quebec City, during Kinomada, I met Nicky Gee, and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by the contrast between Nicky’s orderly everyday life and flamboyant alter ego. I was instantly won over by Nicky’s hip-hop, blending sarcasm with social commentary. This film blends documentary portraiture with a homemade style of staging, imagined and improvised with Nicky Gee, challenging intolerance through boldness, humor, and creativity.
