Synopsis

In WWI-ravaged Belgium, war throws together a “Quiet Mouse” and a theatre-minded tailor. Though one wrong move spells death, they fall recklessly into love. Dedicating themselves to crafting fantasies. Torn about how best to serve their country but determined to showcase the brave visions of a “Band of Rejects.” Pierre and Francis (Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne, Cannes’ joint Best Actor winners) balance grunt work—pulling cannons, hauling corpses—with showbiz. Francis using the spark of female impersonation to inch closer to sheepish Pierre. The liminal space of the war allows Francis to express himself, and soon he has transformed a barn into a theatre, enlisting Pierre’s services. In a situation where grief is treated as a disease and excised, the two men’s troupe becomes a voice for their comrades’ pain. Lukas Dhont’s triumph of gesture is Cabaret on the Western Front—a film of exquisite beauty that can turn sawdust into snow. Full of brutality and cruelty, but also great gentleness. Dhont (writer-director of festival sensations Girl and Close) trades standard wartime tropes for a rousing exploration of artistic growth and mutual self-discovery. A thin line drawn between cowardice and true valour.

Filmmaker Bio

Lukas Dhont is a Belgian filmmaker and screenwriter born in Ghent in 1991. He studied Audio-Visual Arts at KASK Conservatorium and first gained recognition with award-winning short films including Corps Perdu and L'Infini. His debut feature, Girl (2018), premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, where it won the Caméra d'Or and Queer Palm. His second feature, Close (2022), won the Grand Prix at Cannes and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. His work frequently explores identity, intimacy, transformation, and queer experience. Coward is his third feature film.

Director's Statement

Lukas Dhont conceived Coward as a way to challenge the traditional imagery of war and masculinity. Inspired by archival photographs of soldiers dancing, cross-dressing and creating art behind the front lines, he wanted to foreground tenderness, companionship and humour alongside violence. For Dhont, these hidden images reveal another way of understanding male bonding: not as a force of destruction, but as a source of care and resistance. The film also questions the fear attached to being labelled a coward, exploring the courage it takes to express vulnerability, desire and one's fullest self in a world built on repression.
