In the heat of August, thousands of sandpipers pause their migration in the Bay of Fundy. Nearby, Tom's quiet country life is interrupted by Nancy, a friend he hasn't seen in months. Under watchful hawks and rural masculinity, the two trans friends recharge together.
Dom Léger is a queer, trans and acadian cultural worker and artist. He lives in the beautiful Memramcook valley in New-Brunswick. Shorebirds is his first independently produced short film.
This project is an ode to being queer and trans in a rural context. Through this film, I seek to capture the duality that defines so many queer and trans experiences in rural landscapes: the profound freedom found in nature itself, contrasted against the threat that emerges when rural masculinity enters the frame.
