Synopsis

Some loves refuse to stay in the past. Years after their passionate relationship ended, ìfé and Adaora unexpectedly cross paths again in Lagos, forcing both women to reckon with the lives they have built—and the feelings they thought they had left behind. Adaora has settled into married life, while ìfé has found love and a new life in South Africa. A chance encounter at a Lagos bookstore brings them face to face, stirring memories, desire, and questions neither is prepared to answer. As their connection resurfaces, the carefully constructed lives of both women begin to shift. Directed by Pamela Adie and written by Uyaiedu Ikpe-Etim, ìfé: (The Sequel) follows the groundbreaking 2020 film ìfé, widely recognized as Nigeria’s first lesbian film. Returning to the characters several years later, the sequel expands their story into a tender and politically resonant exploration of love, identity, choice, and the courage to live authentically. Set in contemporary Lagos, the film places queer love at its centre while acknowledging the social pressures and risks surrounding it. Intimate, romantic, and deeply human, ìfé: (The Sequel) is ultimately a story about choosing a life that feels true.

Director's Statement

Growing up in Nigeria, I rarely saw authentic queer love stories on screen, especially not ones that reflected the lives, struggles, and joys of LGBTQ+ people in Africa. Stories about us were often erased, misrepresented, or hidden behind coded language. ìfé was born out of a deep desire to change that. I wanted to create a film that does not ask for permission to exist but boldly claims space for African queer love. […] With ìfé, I want others like me to know that happiness is worth pursuing and sacrificing for.
