Adeline, who identifies as nonbinary, tries to tie a tie for the first time. What begins as a simple act of gender-affirming care turns into satin-polyester chaos when a YouTube tutorial misgenders them.
Cooper Dalbo is a Melbourne based writer and director of short films. He has collaborated with the independent Australian filmmaking collective, Beezal Mop, to create two-minute short films that screen globally in festivals and independent cinemas. His most recent short film Lookin, premiered at SIFF in 2024 where it won Best LGBTQ+ Narrative. Dalbo is continuing his expression of queer exploration with his new project, How To Tie A Tie.
How To Tie A Tie was inspired by gender and identity, it is a surreal, crafty, and affectionate short film that expresses the power we assign to objects and items, and how that power can cause internal conflict. For me, this film allowed me to explore my own queer identity through comedic timing and big red ties—a demonstration of my voice getting stronger with the stories I want to tell as a filmmaker.
