For his 18th birthday, Édouard celebrates at a chalet with friends, but buried tensions and the arrival of his brother Max force them to confront unsettling truths about trust, boundaries, and consent.
Trained in film directing at UQAM, François Lalonde creates works intended to be generous toward their audiences. Drawn to coming-of-age stories, he uses the genre to explore his characters' emotional upheavals while working with the codes of popular culture. He directed the shorts Fair Ball (2022) and Usual spleen (2022), both screened at festivals. Alongside his directing work, Lalonde also works as an assistant director on feature films and television series.
At a time when masculinist rhetoric is increasingly reaching young people on social media, I wanted to offer, with Brothers in arms, a sensitive and positive vision of what it means to be a man. By taking a critical yet compassionate look at today's issues of sexual consent and toxic masculinity, the film immerses us in the frenzy of a night of teenage debauchery. Between what we think we know and what we have actually seen, how do we respond to the problematic behavior of someone we love?
