A photojournalist retreats to a small seaside town in Sicily to grieve and remember a former lover. There, an unexpected friendship with a neighbour across the balcony develops into a playful exchange that gradually exposes vulnerability and hidden truths.
Adam Argyrides is a queer screenwriter who is dedicated to telling stories to uplift underrepresented or marginalized voices. His work often deals with themes of the human condition with a focus on identity and sexuality. […] He attended the Terre di Cinema directing residency in Sicily, Italy where he got to shoot his debut short film, Even When You Cry, on 35 mm, under the mentorship of renowned cinematographer, Vincenzo Condorelli. He recently went to Cannes Film Festival to promote his film in the Short Film Corner.
I made Even When You Cry out of a desire to understand how we find our way back to one another when grief makes us feel disconnected from the world. […] Sometimes, the smallest gestures can communicate what words cannot. […] The film’s silence is deeply personal to me. As someone of Italian descent who does not speak Italian fluently, I have experienced the vulnerability of entering a space where language is a barrier, and the unexpected intimacy of discovering other ways to communicate. […] Ultimately, Even When You Cry is a film about the possibility of being reached.
