Indigenous Rising, the first team to represent Indigenous peoples at the Roller Derby World Cup, unites across continents to claim space and spark a powerful movement.

It is a unique opportunity to highlight and bring female voices in the industry together and share the many profound ways they crafted the film in collaboration with Indigenous Rising and how this process has impacted them as well.

Courtney Montour
Courtney Montour[writer and director]
Courtney Montour is a Kanien’kehá:ka writer and director from Kahnawà:ke whose work have screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, and Margaret Mead. Her short Mary Two-Axe Earley: I Am Indian Again (2021) won Best Documentary Short at imagineNATIVE, Media Arts Festival and the American Indian Film Festival. Named one of Playback’s 2024 TV Directors of the Year for CBC’s The Knowing, Montour is also a recipient of the NDN Collective Changemaker Fellowship (2022) and King Charles III’s Coronation Medal. Rising Through the Fray is her debut feature documentary.
Kristen Brown
Kristen Brown[cinematographer]
Kristen Brown is a Montreal-based director of photography. Blending the realism of documentary with the stylization and craft of fiction film, her work shows an authentic vision of the world in both unscripted and fictionalized narratives. Her recent work is streaming on CBC Gem, APTN, Isuma TV, and the New Yorker Documentary.
Catherine Legault
Catherine Legault[editor]
Catherine Legault is an award-winning filmmaker and editor with a degree in Film Production from Concordia University. A recipient of two Gémeaux Awards and an Iris Award, she has edited numerous films over the past twenty years that have screened internationally in cinemas, at festivals, and on television. Her work is recognized for its sensitivity, narrative fluidity, and ability to weave together diverse perspectives.
