Alex is in the throes of his transition when his best friend abandons a joint venture to assert their burgeoning identities he’s forced to confront his anxieties before entering the unknown alone.
Anthony is an Irish writer/director who debuted in the arts as an actor and performer within the Ballybough Rising Star Youth Troupe, the National Performing Arts School and Dublin Youth Theatre. He gained his Higher National Diploma in Film Production from Coláiste Dhúlaigh as valedictorian. Thereafter, he completed a BA (Hons.) in Film and TV Production from the National Film School at IADT, majoring in drama direction. To date, he continues to develop and produce short form content, non-fiction and narrative alike, with the intention of seeking out new and exciting stories that champion ordinary everyday heroes.
I was inspired to write Panic Attack when a trans teenager approached me to request the passcode to the male bathroom where I was working at the time. I assumed initially, from the timbre of their voice, that I was going to address a female but when I looked up and into their eyes I realised an anxious individual had put themselves out there and moreover, in that moment, it meant the world to them. The encounter left an indelible impression upon me which I sought to impart to others and so my research began. I’m still trying to understand the concept of what it means to be transgender but the experience I shared led me to take that first step. We can all relate to being vulnerable and afraid when faced with adversity and the desire to assert ourselves is lifelong, not simply diminishing when we ‘come-of-age’. To that end, I want to help people to realise why an issue that affects some of us should affect us all. Panic Attack is a day-in-the-life, not a lecture or a debate of principles, my desire is to show not tell, to provoke thought and inspire action in a compelling manner.
