In this follow-up to sultry crowd-pleaser Mascarpone (I+N34, 2021), pastry chef Antonio is now social-media famous, yet creatively and romantically dry. When his former lover emerges from a three-year absence, Antonio realizes he’s been missing an integral ingredient and will stop at nothing to win Luca’s inspiring affections. Not long after reuniting with Luca (Gianmarco Saurino), Antonio (Giancarlo Commare) discovers he’s in a serious relationship with the generous Tancredi (Andrea Fuorto), who Luca works with at a group home for LGBTQ+ teens. Learning this, Antonio goes full-on Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding, ready to scheme and claw to get the man who got away, with his best friend and accountant as backup (comedian Michela Giraud) and a hunky, strung-along boyfriend (Giulio Corso) as bait. Like The Empire Strikes Back, which the film winkingly name-drops, this is a darker, feistier sequel rainbow-sprinkled with the original’s humour and hopeful striving. From being a “puppet” of his employer to opening his own bakery with Luca, from running away from commitment to being consumed by it, Antonio experiments with the best way to work with leftovers.
