A short music film set to classical music from Québec and filmed in a colourful, cinematic style, Doux temps (Sweet Times) explores the sharp contrast between, on the one hand, the somewhat routine daily lives of four characters and, on the other, the lyrical sweep of words and music that evoke the amorous passions of the ‘sweet days’ of youth.
Ravenna Tran is a London-based Chinese-Vietnamese American director and cinematographer, who discovered a love of storytelling through filmmaking later in life after several career changes. There are many themes that surface in her filmwork - love, memories and past lives, human growth and acceptance, and being lost then found.
The story of Divine Intervention was inspired by the random interactions of the kindness of strangers in 2021, during my first year in London. In moments of loneliness and isolation in a big new city, these seemingly mundane encounters with angelic-like souls would make my days lighter. My work is about finding human connections and the overlooked beauty in everyday moments that are often magnified through a surreal or escapist lens. As a solo second-generation Asian-American child to overworked and often absent immigrant-refugee parents, I would find company in the worlds and characters of television programmes and films. This inspires the types of films I make today - comfort films and stories that allow idle daydreaming and optimism. 'Divine Intervention' is a celebration of love, joy, fun, and hope - feelings I want people to feel when they watch the film.
