Coming of age is nicer the second time around, especially when you take the ride as a passive voyeur in a dark theatre. I did it with Zou Chan’s Drifting Flowers (Taiwan) and Karin Babinskà’s Dolls (Czech Republic), two seminal directors to come out of places where lesbians don’t exactly have their own province. In Drifting Flowers, we’re privy to the Taiwanese ways of being gay, fleshed out in three chapters for our viewing pleasure. The film has it’s comedic moments and the long, pensive art shots to boot. Fans of last year’s i+n will recognize the style and the director from Spider Lilies.
