image+nation, Canada’s oldest and largest LGBT film festival, went off with a bang on Saturday night at the Cinéma Impérial with the screening of its closing film, DROOL, with American director Nancy Kissam in attendance.

image+nation XXII’s jury, comprised of Joe Balass (Director, Baghdad Twist), Étienne Desrosiers (Director, Miroirs d’été) and Meg Hewings (Film critic, Hour), also presented the following prizes:

“For its complex and sensual treatment of human relations, delivered with finesse in a self-reflexive narrative.”

This edition of the festival also saw the launch of QUEEREMENT QUEBEC, a web-based initiative that gives all Quebecers – especially those living outside of Montreal – the opportunity to screen the homegrown shorts presented during the festival. This evolving project is a reflection of the myriad perspectives and viewpoints of those who live as members of the LGBT community in a contemporary Quebec society.

image+nation XXII offered up 11 days of wall-to-wall inventive queer cinema at the Cinéma Impérial, the Goethe Institute and the JA de Sève Theatre. Once more, image+nation confirmed its relevance on the local and international festival circuit as an important cultural event.

Young and queer. The cultural universe of growing up LGBT is in constant flux and ever expanding - pushing the boundaries and definitions of both “youth” and “queer” to carve out self-identified spaces and realities. The international roster of productions featured in Generation Q offer vibrant reflections of this. At times light-hearted and humorous and at others darkly disturbing, the features and shorts included this year offer a wide spectrum of perspectives and experiences on what it means to be young and queer in the 21st century.

Our Generation Q showcase has been a resounding success! Thanks to all who came out. There is still time to check out some cutting edge queer stuff though, so grab your partner and let’s go ’round to the movies!

Hey, content de savoir que vous êtes toujours aussi nombreux aux représentations! Le festival bat son plein et pour ne pas en manquer une seconde, je vous propose Soundless Wind Chime, une co-production Chine/Suisse, présenté à l’Impérial

Un film poétique où les voyages se multiplient et d’où l’amour naît. Qui dit voyage dit souvent départ ou retour, l’amour en est trop souvent la victime. Ah! l’amour à l’étranger si beau soit-il n’est jamais aussi simple qu’on le voudrait.

Le film est précédé du court métrage Frequent Traveler. Parce qu’on a chacun nos raisons d’aimer passer les contrôles de sécurité à l’aéroport… ! Bon voyage!

Wednesday, 9 pm at Laika (4040 St-Laurent blvd.).

Le monde change. Le monde évolue. Le monde change et évolue aussi pour les personnes homosexuelles. Mais pour les gays et lesbiennes de l’Iran, de la Mauritanie ou de l’Arabie saoudite (pour ne nommer que ceux-là) le monde n’a pas encore assez changé, n’a pas encore assez évolué. Leur orientation sexuelle leur risque toujours la peine de mort. Et dans plus de 80 autres pays, la répression policière, l’emprisonnement et l’intimidation sont monnaie courante.  Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride, présenté en première mondiale dimanche à 14h à l’Impérial, dresse un bilan planétaire des droits de la communauté LGBT.

Quant à Annette Mangaard, elle livre un peu dans la même veine avec General Idea: Art, AIDS and the fin de siècle, présenté dimanche à 19h30 au Goethe-Institut de Montréal. Le groupe militantiste General Idea fut un collectif artistique aux retombées internationales qui fit son apogée dans les années 1980, au même moment où débutait l’épidémie de sida. Un documentaire artistique sur un groupe avant-gardiste et engagé qui allait devenir un précurseur de l’art LGBT et qui allait contribuer à faire évoluer les mentalités dans ce monde en changement.

Pascal-Alex Vincent s’est distingué souvent avec ses courts métrages. Si vous n’avez jamais eu l’occasion d’en voir un, Bébé Requin est présenté ce samedi à 21h30 à l’Impérial suivi immédiatement de Donne-moi la main. À noter également que Bébé Requin faisait parti de la sélection officielle du Festival de Cannes de 2005.

Next we have FRUIT FLY and FIG TREES. Sunday’s Fruit Fly has the added bonus of having the director of the short, DAN’S BIG HANDS in attendance. It’s always nice to see the people behind the film, don’t you think? Fruit Fly is a sometimes-quiet, sometimes finger-banging long-metrage with major diversity in its casting and subject matter. Directed by H.P. Mendoza, it’s about an American-Filipina performance artist in search of her bio mom (via the gay bars and the singing. And the dancing).

Rounding out our queer triangle (and mixing metaphors!) is John Greyson’s Fig Trees on Tuesday at 9:15 pm. Greyson’s latest is a remarkably complex and moving rumination on AIDS activism, which this celebrated director has put together through the scope of experimental documentary.

We like to move it, move it!

Hollywood, je t’aime is about a a boy’s journey to California after being scorned in France. It’s sexy, it’s sweet, it’s touching, it’s funny, sufficiently artsy—it’s everything you could possibly want for an opening film! And if you’re wondering if that hot boy from Dr. Quin Medicine Woman is in it, then YES! Chad Allen does play a wickedly wonderful role in this one. Because image+nation loves you.

Jamie Travis also opens the fest, with his short entitled The Armoire, which won an honorary mention at September’s Toronto International Film Festival. Read an interview with Jamie here.
